Suzie was already out of bed when her alarm went off at 5:30 am. She had had that same awful dream again but she forgot about it right away because she was so excited to try on her new Nike running shoes. And besides it was the first day of Spring and all the song birds were singing from the pink cherry blossoms whose flowery scent led her downstairs to an open window. She was always forgetting to close the kitchen window, sweet Suzie. That's what her friends called her. Her friends would also tell you that sweet Suzie always did the right thing. Anyway, she made her breakfast, a small bowl of oats with delicious blueberries, strawberries and raspberries topped with local honey, brown sugar and coconut cream. While she waited for her food to digest she finished writing that letter to a good friend who had recently fallen down and out and was in need of a little pick me up. It felt good to write a friend a letter because it lifted both of their spirits. So now that Suzie felt so good about starting her day she laced up her yellow Nikes and opened the door for her morning jog. The morning dew smelled so sweet and she thanked it for feeding her flowers as she trotted down the sidewallk. The sun was peeking over the mountains. Sweet suzie only noticed one cloud in the sky a little one in the shape of a bird without wings. She sighed a happy sigh thinking of how peaceful her morning run had been but then she rounded the corner on Windsor Lane and immediately noticed the blue and red lights flashing from down the way. Her heart sank. She worried someone was getting in trouble. As she approached she saw the policemen laughing as if playing some sort of game. It made suzie feel a little uncmfy so she crossed to the other side of the sttreet. for a second or two it looked like a tree had fallen on her neighbor's wrought-iron fence. but it cofused her because trees were not supposed to bleed like that. but then she saw that a deer had impaled itself on the fence. Two spikes right through the belly. What made it worse was that the deer was still alive rocking back and forth wheezing in pain. She wanted to turn and run from the sight but her legs carried her closer and closer. A young officer approached the deer and put his government-issued Rugar LC9 up to the animal's head and pulled the trigger. Nothing moved. the day stood still as blood dripped slowly down the deer's mouth down the fence and onto the sidewalk. Suzie slowed down just enough to meet eyes with the young officer who had pulled the trigger. And not knowing what else to do, she smiled. And he smilled back. Suzie went on a run that day.
